Like the tide, the willow crop surrounding Susie Yates' studio in Suffolk, England, changes with the seasons. One moment the countryside is full; the next the willow has been harvested and the marshes are empty. This seasonal landscape lies at the heart of Susie’s rich and passionate use of colours, and forms the core of her portfolio. Working from home in Brampton, Susie views some of her works through long narrow windows. This unusual perspective allows her to reveal a great deal of detail in a small area, stimulating the imagination as to what lies beyond.
She is also excited by the varying colours of domestic fowl and these are described in the vibrant colours which, she feels, so beautifully reflect their character. She uses a variety of media in all her work, from coloured inks mixed with oil pastels, to water colours with created textures. The relationship between art and the environment is not new to Susie Yates. For the last fifteen years she has been an active part of Brampton Willows, her family’s willow business, designing furniture in which art and nature coexist in a unique and exciting way. She has also taught art since graduating from Exeter College of Art, and is currently the Art Specialist at a local school.
